The film tells the story of the family of German writer Angelika Schrobsdorff. Dictatorships, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the conflict in the Middle East have left deep traces in their lives. The narrative focuses primarily on events in Bulgaria, but it begins with a rediscovery of Berlin and memories of an escape from Nazi Germany in 1939.
